The Greater New Orleans Immunization Network (GNOIN) was created in April 1998 when Christian Health Ministries partnered with several area hospitals to implement an immunization program for the children of Metropolitan New Orleans. The program focused on increasing the immunization rates for children by age two years. GNOIN offers the combined elements of an immunization registry and a mobile immunization unit (MIU). The primary objective of the Greater New Orleans Immunization Network is to protect all children from vaccine preventable diseases. This is accomplished by raising parental awareness on the importance of timely infant immunizations, by establishing a systematic method to locate and immunize children and by providing convenient access to immunization services. An immunization registry provides a confidential, computerized record of immunizations. Coverage rates are easily calculated to establish and monitor the immunization rates of children. As families move in and out of public and private health care systems, registries serve as a powerful tool to ensure that children receive timely and proper immunizations. Children are enrolled in The Greater New Orleans Immunization Network registry at all 10 network hospitals and on the Mobile Immunization Unit. Health care providers are key to the success of any immunization effort.
